Help from on high - Charles Spurgeon
A prayer for help
Oct 29, 2024
I found this prayer by Charles Spurgeon - Help from on high. It is, however written in the old 1900s. The language was a tad bit too old, even for me.
Here is the prayer translated to a more modern version of English by GPT.
O God, King of kings and Lord of lords, we worship You.
We bow before Your throne with joy in our hearts.
We can honestly say that we find our delight in You. There was a time when we were afraid of You, bound by fear. Now we respect You, but we love You just as much as we respect You. Once, the thought that You were everywhere frightened us. We asked, "Where can we hide from You?" It made even the thought of hell worse because we knew that You would be there too. But now, Lord, we want to find You. We long to feel Your presence, and it's the greatest joy to know that You are here. When we're sick, Your presence brings comfort. When we suffer, You bring relief. And when we pray, Your presence makes any place feel like heaven itself.
Come close, Father, come very close to Your children. Some of us are physically weak and discouraged. Please touch us and tell us not to be afraid. Some of us might be struggling with worldly temptations. Come near and help us overcome these influences with Your greater power.
Even worship might be difficult for some of us. It feels like we're being attacked and our prayers are being washed away. Give us strength to rise above these challenges and find rest in Your presence today.
Father, let Your children rest now. Take away our burdens for a while, and give us perfect peace. Help us now, we pray. You've already cleansed Your people through Jesus' sacrifice, but now please cleanse us from today's struggles. Like washing our feet, refresh us and prepare us for deep fellowship with You.
Lord Jesus, remove anything that keeps us from connecting closely with God. Take away any distracting wishes or desires. Remove any worries or painful memories that might keep us from focusing completely on You. We don't want anything competing for our attention anymore. You see us and know our struggles. Help us overcome them.
We come boldly into Your presence, possible only because Jesus has made the way through His sacrifice. We can now approach You as friends.
Our God, we belong to You, and You belong to us. We share the same purpose and fight the same battle. Your fight is our fight, and our battle is Yours. Please help us. Just as You gave strength to defeat evil in heaven, help us in our human weakness. Let us also overcome evil through Your power.
Father, we're very weak. Even worse, we're prone to sin when left alone and easily fall to temptation. So help us. We admit that sometimes even during prayer, when we're closest to You, evil thoughts or wrong desires pop up. We're so easily distracted! Lord, help us. We want to come even closer to You, to hide under Your protection. We want to lose ourselves in You, letting Christ live through us instead of living for ourselves.
Lord, make us holy. Let Your Spirit fill every part of us, control every emotion, and use every ability we have to serve You.
Come, Holy Spirit. We know You've worked in us before. Come more fully now and take control. As we stand before You, our greatest desire is to be completely holy, totally dedicated, and cleansed from all evil. Take our minds, hearts, hands, and feet - use all of us for You. Take our resources; help us not to be selfish with them. Take our abilities; let us use them to serve You rather than to make ourselves look good.
Let every breath be for You, every minute spent for You. Help us live purposefully, and while we must be involved in the world, help us make it better. Let us be good influences in society. May our attitude and words reflect heaven, and may we positively impact the world before we leave it. Lord, hear this prayer.
Now that we have Your attention, we pray for this troubled world. Sometimes it horrifies us so much we wish we could hide from it all. We see violence, theft, and murder, with people hurting each other. Lord, have mercy on our cities. What can be done with all these millions? What can we do? At least help every believer to do their best. Don't let us add to the problems, but help us contribute to solutions.
We feel we can talk to You about this because Your servant Abraham spoke with You about Sodom. We now pray for our cities and nations. Lord, let Your kingdom come. Spread Your truth and light. Defeat evil in all its forms. We long for Christ's return and His reign. Until then, Lord, prepare us for the fight and help us be among those who overcome through Jesus' sacrifice and our testimony, because we're willing to give everything for You.
We also pray for our loved ones. Lord bless the sick and heal them in Your timing. Help them learn from their suffering. Some friends are very weak and afraid. God bless them. As their physical bodies decline, let them look forward to their heavenly home with peace. Help us hold loosely to earthly things. Let us live like travelers, not permanent residents, ready to move on at any time.
Save those who don't know You, and help those who believe but haven't publicly declared their faith. Build Your church through those who believe and follow You. Please continue to multiply faithful believers. We're sad about those who have left the faith. Bring them back; don't let evil claim any more souls. Let Your light shine brightly through Your people.
Lord, we have so many more requests, but we must stop. We leave this incomplete prayer at Your throne with this final note: We ask all this in Jesus' name. Amen.
