Rock paper scissors algorithms 2011
May 27 · daniel.lawrence.lu ⎯ Rock paper scissors is a game about predicting the opponent. This is a hard problem. Someone new to this may ask, “Why not just play randomly?” It is well known that it is impossible to consistently beat a random player. Then why bother? As it turns out, a random strategy will only win 50% of its matches. However, a good predicting algorithm can exploit patterns in not-so-random opponents (including humans) and beat them more often. In fact, some of the strongest engines on the leaderboard have a win rate of over 80%!

May 26 · wy-lang.org ⎯ 文言, or wenyan, is an esoteric programming language that closely follows the grammar and tone of classical Chinese literature. Moreover, the alphabet of wenyan contains only traditional Chinese characters and 「」 quotes, so it is guaranteed to be readable by ancient Chinese people. You too can try it out on the online editor, download a compiler, or view the source code.

Project Gemini
May 26 · geminiprotocol.net ⎯ Gemini is a new internet technology supporting an electronic library of interconnected text documents. That’s not a new idea, but it’s not old fashioned either. It’s timeless, and deserves tools which treat it as a first class concept, not a vestigial corner case. Gemini isn’t about innovation or disruption, it’s about providing some respite for those who feel the internet has been disrupted enough already. We’re not out to change the world or destroy other technologies. We are out to build a lightweight online space where documents are just documents, in the interests of every reader’s privacy, attention and bandwidth.

Systematic design of multi-join GROUP BY queries
May 26 · kb.databasedesignbook.com ⎯ Author: Alexey Makhotkin squadette@gmail.com, ~5400 words. This is the first public revision of this text. Early readers have shared encouraging feedback, but I’m sure there’s still room for improvement. I’m releasing it now to gather broader input from a wider audience. Problem Many times I’ve seen people asking for help with fixing some complicated SQL queries. A common scenario is that people try to solve the problem by using JOIN with multiple tables, sometimes with subqueries.
